Timeframes & multi-timeframe reading
The same coin can be in an uptrend, a downtrend and a range — all at once, on different timeframes.

💡 Google Maps zoom levels
Zoomed out, Google Maps shows the motorway from Delhi to Mumbai. Zoomed in, you see every pothole and roundabout. Both views are true, but you would never plan the whole journey from the street view. Timeframes are zoom levels: the weekly chart is the motorway, the 5-minute chart is the potholes.
What a timeframe is
Each candle covers a fixed period: 1 minute, 15 minutes, 1 hour, 4 hours, 1 day, 1 week or 1 month. A daily candle summarises all the trades of that day; a 1-hour chart shows the same day as 24 smaller candles. The Pro Chart on this site offers 15 timeframes from 1 minute to 1 month.
Matching timeframes to your style
| Style | Decide direction on | Time entries on | Typical holding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long-term investor | 1M / 1W | 1D | Months–years |
| Swing trader | 1W / 1D | 4h | Days–weeks |
| Day trader | 4h / 1h | 15m / 5m | Minutes–hours |
A popular rule of thumb is a factor of 4–6 between timeframes: daily → 4h → 1h, or weekly → daily → 4h.
Top-down reading in three steps
- Higher timeframe (the tide): is the trend up, down or sideways? Where are the major support and resistance zones?
- Middle timeframe (the waves): is price pulling back towards support in an uptrend, or rallying into resistance in a downtrend?
- Lower timeframe (the ripples): only now look for an entry trigger — a rejection candle, a small breakout, a momentum turn — and define the stop.
Why lower timeframes are dangerous for beginners
- More noise: random spikes look like signals.
- More trades = more fees and more emotional decisions.
- Stops get hit by normal wiggles, then price continues in your direction without you.
Crypto trades 24/7, so "daily" candles close at 00:00 UTC on most exchanges. Weekend liquidity is thinner, and false moves are more common.
Confluence: when timeframes agree
A setup where the weekly trend is up, the daily has pulled back to support, and the 4h prints a bullish rejection candle has three timeframes agreeing. That is confluence. A 5-minute signal against the weekly trend is a low-quality bet.
🧮 Practical example: one coin, three timeframes
Key takeaways
- Timeframes are zoom levels of the same market.
- Direction from the higher timeframe; timing from the lower.
- Use a factor of ~4–6 between timeframes.
- Confluence across timeframes raises quality.
- Beginners: start with daily and 4h.
